Hello! Today sees the start of the month long Creative Fingers Challenge. This month, there’s a set of five stencils up for grabs! Accordingly, my inspiration is the end result of me brushing up on my mixed media skills.
Unusually for me, I started by making some background papers. I just had the urge to do some messy crafting and didn’t really start with any project in mind. The textured background, I used this wax paper technique. My wax paper wasn’t very waxy but I still think it turned out quite nice. The matting layer was made using this DIY metallic cardstock technique. I just loved how I was able to create both backing papers so they matched perfectly. For both layers, I used the brand new Uncharted Mariner Distress ink colour.
Once I’d made the backgrounds, I knew this was going to be an underwater scene. I added a strip of plasterer’s tape as the first layer of the design. It reminded me of netting so I thought it would fit in amongst all the layers I was creating. Even though this tape is slightly tacky, I secured the tape to the back of the cardstock with pieces of tape so it wouldn’t come away too much from the waxy paper on the front.
I then die cut some underwater scenery from white cardstock and coloured each piece with Zig watercolour brush pens. I used Alexandra Renke dies for the shells, seahorse and the larger coral and added in a few extras from the My Favorite Things Under The Sea Die set. I added some of my homemade shimmer pen to the shells and allowed it to blend the watercolour pen even further. Once I glued all the elements in place with Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive that I knew would hold securely on the wax paper, I finished the seahorse off with a single black pearl for its eye.
Instead of trying to heat emboss a greeting onto the wax paper, I decided to add a chunky, gold peel off sticker sentiment and added a gold peel off decorative border to balance the sudden addition of the gold pieces. To finish off, I added the panel to a cream 5″×7″ card base. I’m happy with how this all turned out but, as so often occurs, my mixed media projects ended up as a scene card. I just seem to be incapable of anything with less structure! I think I’m going to need to try harder to be more random next time but I’m not at all confident I’ll be successful with that!😂
Don’t forget you have four weeks to add an entry to the Creative Fingers Challenge for your chance to win the awesome stencil set. Thanks so much for spending time with me today, I look forward to next time! 😊
