Hello, I hope you’re having a happy holiday season so far. It always seems to be a mad rush at this stage, regardless of how much prep work we do.

Each year, Creative Fingers Challenge ends the year with a thanks to it’s sponsors. This year, I’ve chosen to created a sweet card using a stunning image from Lemon Shortbread, called Poinsettia Girl.

I started by printing the Poinsettia Girl onto Neenah Classic Crest Solar White cardstock and colored it with my Chameleon Pens. Once finished, I deepened the tones in the hair with a brown Prismacolor pencil, just in the darkest areas and shadows.

Next, I moved onto the card itself. I die cut a piece of plain white cardstock with one of Sue Wilson’s Noble Pierced Rectangles dies to fit a 5″×7″ card base. I then embossed the piece with Sue Wilson’s Frosted Window embossing folder and attached it to a piece of slightly larger red card and glued both to my card base.

When I colored my Poinsettia Girl, I had no idea what die I would be using to cut the image out. I preferred to wait until the image was complete to make that decision. I eventually decided on a generic lace edged rectangle that fit my colored image the best, but I had areas that had been colored that would cross over into the lace edge of the die. I went ahead and die cut the Poinsettia Girl but then trimmed all the lace edge off each side of the image, leaving me with just a plain rectangle. I then cut a second lace edged rectangle from plain white cardstock and glued the Poinsettia Girl rectangle on top.

By trimming the edge off the colored image, I was left with a perfect fitting rectangle piece for that die cut frame (have you noticed how many differences there are between rectangle die sets?). I then finished the frame off with a peel off sticker border, so the join wasn’t visible and, by doing things this way, there was no coloring on the lace edging either.

I decided that the best way to further embellish this panel would be to continue with the poinsettia theme. Using Dee’s Distinctively Mini Poinsettia die, I cut flowers from a piece of red and a piece of green cardstock. I assembled the flowers and added the green flowers beneath each to add more greenery than the die originally intends. I had used Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive to glue all these together, so I set the floral arrangements aside to fully dry.

To mount the Poinsettia Girl onto the card, I added double sided foam tape to the back of the lace edged feature and, using the largest flower as a guide to assist placement, I adhered the Poinsettia Girl panel to the embossed background. I then added the flowers, using more Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive, to diagonal corners of the card feature.

Each flower was coated with a layer of Spectrum Noir Clear Overlay Sparkle Pen and I added glitter glue to each flower’s centre. I then finished off the card by adding a small peel off sticker greeting to the top corner of the lace edged rectangle.

I have been practicing this craft since 2004 and am self taught, only learning from published lessons. I have found this has stopped me learning others' bad habits and I often find economical ways to achieve my results. I've found that primarily making cards gives me a constant supply of projects to complete and giving them as part of a gift is always well received. The only downside to it all? I dare not buy a card for anyone now, they would be devistated and, quite possibly insulted. But I take that as a compliment.
